Winter Solstice Blessings to all,

On this, the shortest day after the longest night of winter I want to focus on one of my favourite illustrations: An Cailleach Bhéara.

The legend of An Cailleach Bhéara is a rich tapestry woven into the fabric of Irish mythology. This ancient goddess embodies the fierce and tender elements of nature, representing both the harshness of winter and the nurturing warmth of the earth. Her figure, often depicted as a crone, signifies wisdom that comes with age and the cycles of life.

In tales passed down through generations, An Cailleach is said to have shaped the landscape, mountains were formed and valleys carved which each throw of a stone, illustrating her profound connection to the earth itself. Each hill and rock in the Beara peninsula whispers her name, echoing her legacy in the very bones of the land.

As we embrace this winter season, let us remember the power of rest and renewal that An Cailleach signifies. The long nights of winter offer us a time to reflect, to gather strength, and to prepare for the rebirth that spring will inevitably bring. Through her stories, we may find comfort and inspiration to honor our own journeys, mirroring the cycles of nature around us.

In our art, An Cailleach Bhéara serves as a muse, reminding us that in every ending, there is the promise of a new beginning. As we navigate the dark winter days, let's draw upon her strength and resilience, and celebrate the beauty that emerges from even the coldest of seasons.

She is revered as ‘the Great Ancestor,’ the feminine essence of the Celtic World, comparable to Eve. One tale recounts the encounter between a man named Fintan the Wise and this enigmatic figure as he journeyed across Ireland alongside Noah’s granddaughter. He inquired, “Are you she, the grandmother who tasted the apples in the beginning?” In response, she offered only a cryptic smile before turning away, shrouded in mystery.

Legends tell of her passage through seven youthful phases, giving rise to myriad peoples and races. She nurtured 50 foster children, a theme common throughout Irish mythology, embodying the spirit of maternal care. As the creator of the landscape, she cast stones to form mountains and roamed the earth as a shapeshifter, a guardian of the wild, looking after creatures like wolves and deer. In the Irish language, the barn owl is lovingly called ‘Cailleach-oidhche gheal’ — the white old woman of the night, symbolizing her eternal presence. Thus, next time you encounter a barn owl under the moonlit sky, you may glimpse our Cailleach.

One of the most captivating narratives is her connection with Brigid, highlighting their cyclical dance that mirrors the seasons and the solstice. An Cailleach Bhéara is credited with commanding the fierce winds, rains, and storms of winter, standing in stark contrast to Brigid, who embodies light and rejuvenation.

From this day forth, An Cailleach will gradually ease her reign over the elements, culminating in Bealtaine, where she will turn to stone, granting Brigid the opportunity to flourish once more. As the earth awakens from the depths of winter, An Cailleach passes her crown to Brigid who bids farewell to the cold, awaiting An Cailleach’s return at Samhain to embrace the darker days of rest.

In folklore, there exists a superstition regarding St. Brigid’s Day: if the day dawns clear and sunny, winter is destined to linger a while longer, as it allows the Cailleach to venture forth and gather firewood to sustain her presence. Conversely, if the day turns wet, she is unable to emerge, indicating that spring is imminent, softly nudging us toward renewal and warmth

In this illustration, An Cailleach emerges from a storm as a powerful guardian of nature, framed by the silhouettes of the creatures she envelops in her care. Standing upon the ancient entrance stone of Newgrange, this masterful composition captures the essence of winter solstice, a time when earth and sky converge in harmonious light.

Her flowing cape, adorned with the intricate triskele symbol, intertwines themes of infinity and connection, representing her enduring link to the earth and its cycles. This emblem serves as a reminder of the continuous flow of life, reflective of both the past and future.

The pair of barn owls in flight above her head add an element of mystique, embodying wisdom and the ethereal qualities of the night and her shape shifting form. They resonate with the owl's role as a spiritual messenger in Celtic lore, further anchoring An Cailleach’s importance in the tapestry of nature's stories.

Her staff, topped with a cluster of quartz, shines in the dawning light, evoking her ancient throne in Co. Antrim. Connecting the imagery of Newgrange with the broader mythology of the land.

Through this artwork, the viewer is invited to explore the intersection of myth, nature, and the celestial, all under the watchful gaze of An Cailleach, the keeper of the season.

It’s essential to revive and share these ancient tales, as they hold the key to understanding the resilience and strength found in their characters, particularly the formidable women within the Celtic myths. In a time when violence against women and girls looms large in our global narrative, reflecting on these powerful figures can serve as a beacon of hope and empowerment. The stories of the Crones, those wise and unwavering women, echo the importance of self-worth and strength, reminding us all of the intrinsic power we possess.
